How to Make the Perfect Burger

The perfect hamburger is obviously subjective. We all might differ on the toppings, the number of patties, the type of cheese, and more. But there is a rhyme and reason to the production process, so let's take a quick look at how to make the perfect burger.

This is where you have to start. Selecting the type of meat to use (or whether you use no meat at all and take the veggie burger route) will ultimately make or break the burger. Options to consider are antibiotic and hormone-free, grass fed, the type of cattle such as Angus, or even the decision to use an alternative like buffalo are all on the table. It's also imperative to cook the meat properly. Make sure it's delivered at the requested cooking temperature using cooking equipment that will provide maximum flavor potential.

This is where things start to get complicated, but at the end of the day, toppings are critical to making the perfect burger. We're not going to tell you what to use on your hamburgers, we're just going to give you some concepts to consider when you add those toppings.

Texture is an important aspect. That's why things like lettuce, bacon, and crispy onion straws are popular, in part because they add those contrasts in texture to softer ingredients like cheese, tomatoes, and even the burger meat itself. Flavor contrasts can also contribute to the perfect burger. Even a simple combination of ketchup and mustard provide a sweet and tangy contrast in flavors that add to the depth of any burger. You're only limited by your imagination!

The bread. The bun. The one thing that, regardless of what type of burger you're making, will always be present twice within the same bite. The bun is literally the first and last thing diners taste on each bite of a hamburger, so choose your bun wisely. Go traditional with a sesame bun. Get creative with a pretzel bun. No matter what, though, make sure those buns are toasted to perfection, as a properly toasted bun will add both flavor and texture to the perfect burger.
